Western Hemlock is the largest of the hemlocks, and is one of the most valuable sources of exportable lumber for Canada. Here at Century Mill Lumber we offer Kiln Dried Clear Western Hemlock. It has a heartwood that is light reddish brown and its sapwood is slightly lighter in colour but usually not distinguishable from the heartwood. Western Hemlock has a straight grain with a coarse, uneven texture and is non-durable regarding decay resistance, and also susceptible to insect attacks. Overall, the wood is good to work with, but because of the disparity between the soft earlywood and the hard latewood, sanding can create dips and uneven surfaces. Western hemlock is most commonly used for mouldings and interior woodworking, general construction, roofing, decking and plywood, as well as for laminating stock and the production of glue-laminated and solid beams.
