ROUGH FLAT CUT DOUGLAS FIR
One of the most common methods for cutting lumber is flat cutting or flat sawing. This is where the Douglas Fir log is run through the blade repeatedly at the same angle. This uniformity of cuts yeilds a range of grain patterns, but the most common is a wavy, or "cathedral" grain.
ROUGH QUARTER CUT DOUGLAR FIR
One of the most common methods for cutting lumber is quarter cutting or quarter sawing. This is where the Douglas Fir log is split into four pieces and cut from multiple angles. This yields a higher quality vertical grain board.
