Red Oak, also known by its scientific name Quercus rubra, is native to Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada, and is arguably the most popular domestic hardwood. Its heartwood is a light to medium brown, commonly with a reddish cast and has a paler sapwood that is not always sharply distinguishable from the heartwood. Red Oak is non-durable in regards to decay resistance and has poor insect resistance. It has a straight grain, with a coarse, uneven texture and very large pores. Because of the large pores, it can become discolored and stained if it comes in contact with water. Red Oak from Century Mill Lumber produces good results with hand and machine tools amd responds well to steam-bending, glues, stains, and finishes well. It is most commonly used for cabinetry, furniture, interior trim, flooring, and veneer. D4S Lumber is a very common material used to build solid wood furniture. The main difference between D4S lumber and non-D4S lumber is that D4S lumber has been dressed on all 4 sides, hence where the name comes from.
